Yeah, me too. When you think of hotbeds of soul music, chances are you don’t think of Portland, Oregon (sorry). But it was “Holdin’ On” that first caught my attention, and to me is the epitome of hair-tossin’ early 80’s girl power pop, which is my favorite genre of music. 28. 79. Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse Of The heart” was an enormous success, and Air Supply had one of the biggest hits of their career with “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All,” and Barry Manilow had his final Top 20 hit with “Read ’Em and Weep.” In 1984, he was approached to contribute two songs to the soundtrack of Streets Of Fire , and he formed the impromptu band Fire, Inc., which featured Holly Sherwood on vocals. Lyrically, it’s a pretty standard song about a less-than-perfect relationship, but I think the words are just something on which to hang that melody and Butler’s unique voice. Kenny Rogers, Kim Carnes, James Ingram – “What About Me” 72. “Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young” and the equally faboo “Nowhere Fast” still hold up almost 30 years later, even though they were both notable flops at the time, with the latter not even charting, and “Tonight” peaking at #80 in June 1984. She didn’t manage to build a sustained career here, which is too bad, because the talent that could turn out a song like “Buffalo Stance” should have been able to produce dozens of hits. Maybe it’s my favorite because it looked like my elementary school music teacher singing with the hot hippie chick who lived down the street and would occasionally babysit. Tane’ Cain had a very brief stint on the chart, but it did yield my favorite forgotten pure pop song of the 80’s. But one of the most sophisticated songs of the year was a surprise hit for a Scottish band named after a Frank Sinatra film character. Ann Wilson – “The Best Man In The World” 33. But their follow up single “Point of No Return” was just as good – if not better. Human League – “Mirror Man” 94. You dont hear them on radio or internet 80's stations, nor can they be found on 80's compilation albums. “Object of My Desire” is a sexy and fun track that combines edgy funk and soulful pop. “The Killing Moon” is a very familiarly popular song in the 80s, but for some reason, again forgotten. Rayvon (2000) This contemporary R&B hit started off the decade on a positive note in 2000, with Shaggy and Rayvon setting the standard of romance to which every teenage boy was set by girls everywhere. 26. The first of two songs from Olivia in the top 40, “The Rumour” should have been a huge comeback hit after being away for a couple of years, but inexplicably, it was one of the biggest flops of her career, peaking at #62 in September 1988. 40. 88. Daily – “Say It, Say It” It’s an ‘80s masterpiece, an American teen anthem and Judd Nelson’s fist in the air. She guested on a British single in 1986 entitled “Looking Good Diving with the Wild Bunch,” and she turned it into a better song of her own called “Buffalo Stance.”. Jane Wiedlen – “Blue Kiss” Rita Coolidge – “All Time High” Kentucky’s Midnight Star fell into the latter category. And of course, the music video, one of the best and creepiest of the decade, with Marilyn vamping it up and those … guys on meathooks. Florida native John Anderson played in rock bands until he discovered outlaw country music and changed his style. 90. There was no way we could get away with not including at least two of his songs. A tableau of family life – dad rushing to work, mom taking care of the house, siblings playing or getting ready to go out – couched in a bouncy song gave a generation of pop music listeners a sense of domestic peace at a time when their families were likely falling apart. Buoyed by an innovative melody and unique sound, along with a Cinderella-inspired video that received heavy airplay on MTV, Joe Jackson had himself a top ten smash with “Steppin’ Out.” Sadly, we don’t hear it much these days. Olivia Newton-John & David Foster – “The Best Of Me” Klymaxx – “Man Size Love” These are 20 of the best 2000s songs you forgot about or secretly have been listening to on the daily. “Our House” is a brilliant pop tune with a gorgeous sound and a sentimental lyric that resonated with record buyers. 76. 86. The song plays during the opening (Schiff and Forsey's demo) and closing (Simple Minds' recording) credits of the John Hughes film The Breakfast Club Kim Carnes & Barbra Streisand – “Make No Mistake, He’s Mine” Laura Branigan – “The Lucky One” Even though it never conquered the charts, it’s a timeless pop song. Michael Jackson and U2 dominated music in 1987. Even though you can date it immediately with its of-the-moment sound, it still makes for a good time all these years later. And that’s a shame, because “Steppin’ Out” is a song that deserves to be heard over and over again. As Casey Kasem would say, “there you have ‘em.” What songs do you think belong on the list? 21. 14. 50 tracks (191:44). Yet “Buffalo Stance” isn’t a protest song, nor does Cherry get political in any way. But they did give us one great album of perfect mid-80’s pop, including the awesome “Hanging On A Heart Attack,” which somehow stalled at #35 in August 1986. But has she decided to get on with her life, or join him in his obvious watery grave? Bardeux – “When We Kiss” Kim Carnes – “Crazy In The Night” Her father was B movie legend Troy Doug McClure, and she married Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain, who wrote the classic ballad “Faithfully” for her (her picture can be seen in the music video). “Heartbreak Beat” became the Psychedelic Furs’ biggest hit in the States, though that’s not really saying much since they didn’t put that many songs on the charts here. But she still has that legacy of songs, including my personal anthem, “The Warrior.”. But the single that preceded it, “Crazy,” was a much better, more epic rock song. 63. 45. Tane’ and Jonathan divorced a couple of years later, and she went back to her maiden name (and possibly had some work done), where as Tane’ McClure she became one of my favorite Queens of 90’s Skinemax. It was an enormous hit (nine weeks at #1), but nothing she followed it up with could hope to compare to its success. “Steppin’ Out” sounded more sophisticated than anything else in the pop world at that time (and any other era for that matter). It peaked at #32 in May of 1983, and is completely undeserving of its forgotten status. Most of the memories the band mentions in the song are universal enough for everyone to identify with, at least for ‘80s kids and older. 44. 59. Here are ten songs from the ‘80s that you’ve probably forgotten about. They placed singles on the R&B and dance charts, but their only top 40 pop hit was “Object of My Desire.”. Chilliwack – “My Girl (Gone, Gone, Gone)” She wrote or co-wrote some of the most memorable hits of the decade, including “Love Is A Battlefield,” “Invincible,” “Better Be Good To Me,” “The Best,” “Never,” and “Obsession,” She released her self-titled album in 1988, and it contained a killer version of “Battlefield,” as well as her own stab at solo pop stardom, “Heart Don’t Fail Me Now.” Unfortunately, it flopped, peaking at #60 in October of ’88. Perfect summer tunes! The band from London created some of the best modern rock of the era, and “Heartbreak Beat” was their best. One of the most unusual songs to make a splash in the ‘80s was an anthem by a nasally voiced country singer celebrating the romantic appeal of sitting on a front porch swing.
